Before taking the course Market Yourself I
lacked the knowledge of how to write a C.V, cover letter and information about
the do’s and don’ts’ in an interview. Nevertheless, today I have realised that
I learned a lot about it from this course. Confidently, I have faced my fears
and worries regarding to a job interview.
At the beginning of the course, it was so hard for me to write the letter and the C.V. I did not know what the things I should write are and the things should not. Moreover, it was hard for me to classify my achievements, skills and qualifications. I had to remember every achievement I have made in my life and decide whether to mention it in the C.V. or not. However, I had to give it a shot and try to write one. The hardest part of the C.V was demonstrating the skills I have and provide evidence regarding it. The presentation we had in class about good C.V.s has helped me to write my C.V easily. From the feedback I got on my C.V., as a first time to writing one, I saw that I did well but I had to edit the layout of the C.V and tried to link my achievements to the job requirement. In addition to writing, my C.V have encouraged me to achieve more in my life, and to work hard so I could fill it with more achievements and experiences.
Afterwards, writing a cover letter should be easier after writing the C.V. I have experienced how to write a bad and a good one. My first cover letter was devastatingly bad because I have not mention the company values that matched mine. Likewise, I wrote what I could receive from the company and I forgot to write about what I could give and provide to company. I had doubts about how to demonstrate my skills, achievements, education background and experiences, as well as, how to link them to the job requirements. As a result, my first experience in writing a cover letter, made me do very well in my second try, as I have mentioned everything needed, from values, education background, to skills, achievements and experiences. Furthermore, I was able to link it to the company and to the requirements, very well. Something I should never forget, when I write a cover letter, is to try to find information about the company, and the receiver’s name. Showing interest in working with the company is important too.
I had fears and worries about doing the interview. As I have never done one before, I did not have the slightest idea about how the atmosphere is going to be, so I couldn’t help but imagine it in a very negative way. Trying new things always make me nervous. Even though, deep inside me, I believed I could do it. The situation reminded me when I was at school, and I had to give a graduation speech to the audience. It was a big challenge for me to stand on the stage, in front of more than five hundred people; all of them were looking at me, and waiting for me to give a speech. I kept telling myself I did it well in my graduation speech, of course, I’m capable of doing well in the job interview, but I have to work hard, and get well prepared to do it. I searched about BAPCO, and tried to know everything about company. Furthermore, I understood the vision and mission of the company very clearly. Equally important, I tried to know what employers want in an employee, and what they look for (A good fit, Qualifications and abilities) in him/her. I have memorized the common questions, and prepared the suitable answers for it.
Regarding to what I have done I should be ready to do the interview. Yet, I was afraid not to do well in the interview. I remembered what I have read in Oprah’s book “What I Know For Sure”, when her boss told her that there is no way she can make it in Chicago, and she is committing a career suicide. She gathered the nerve and told him “You’re right, I may not make it, and I may be walking into unforeseen land mines, but if they don’t kill me, at least I will keep growing”. Her reply inspired me not to worry or feel nervous and anxious about the interview. Oprah’s quote gave me the confident that I needed for the interview. Also inspired me to not worry or feel nervous about the interview. I should not be afraid, because even if I did not do well, I have learned new things from the experience. Consequently, I could beat my fears, and focus more on how I can do well in the interview.
In the final analysis, doing a job interview can be easy when you do it in a process. Firstly, you need to know yourself and the company you are applying for. Secondly, find mutual values between yourself and company. Thirdly, write a C.V that contains the important information about you that the company wants to know them such as your education, qualifications, relevant skills, achievements and voluntary work. After that, write a cover letter and then prepare yourself to the interview by searching about the company, prepare answers for the common questions in a job interview and dress professionally.
